Using Online Spreadsheets in Data Studio

Both Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel (OneDrive) can be used as data sources in Data Studio. The primary differences relate to autosave behavior and how updates are applied.

Google Sheets

    • Automatically saves changes as they are made
    • Autosave cannot be turned off
    • Data Studio updates based on the configured refresh interval (not every cell change)

Considerations:

    • Faster refresh rates may result in more frequent visible updates
    • If editing while content is live, incremental updates may appear on screen
    • Using a slower refresh interval can help prevent partial updates during editing

Excel (Stored in OneDrive)

    • Allows Autosave to be turned ON or OFF

With Autosave ON:

    • Behaves similarly to Google Sheets with continuous updates

With Autosave OFF:

    • Changes can be made and saved manually in a single update
    • Provides more control over when updates appear in Data Studio

Additional Notes

  • Data Studio updates based on the configured refresh interval
  • Default and minimum refresh rates vary by subscription level
  • Shorter refresh intervals increase how frequently updates appear
